Where there was Stones there's now an Oasis

November 28th, 2008

Much to the bemusement of many a music fan the ever modest Noel Gallagher has today come out and stated his band are now in the same league as The Rolling Stones. While not quite ‘in the same league’ as Lennon’s rather controversial “bigger than Jesus” admission, it has begged the question of just how dominant are Oasis in today’s music?

Formed 17 years ago they have just released their eighth studio album – selling half a million copies of their last offering Dig Out Your Sole – with all their albums combined selling more than 50 million records. In 2005, The Guinness Book of World Records declared Oasis the Most Successful Act of the Last Decade and last week the Gallagher brothers stood in as the entourage for Ricky Hatton, carrying his title belts to the ring in his recent fight in Las Vegas.

While it can be argued that they haven’t quite reached Keith Richards or Mick Jaggers heights just yet it seems all too easy for us to overlook the size of their achievements to date. Obviously, you may beg to differ, in which case you’ll probably enjoy these bands on amazingtunes, influenced by The Stones. But for all you nodding Oasis fans, check out some of these and see if you can spot who will ship the next 50m records.

Leona Lewis to sing Obama's Praises

November 25th, 2008

X-Factor winner of 2006 – and now global pop diva – Leona Lewis has been offered the gig of a lifetime performing alongside Jay-Z and Beyonce Knowles at Barack Obama’s inauguration ceremony. Still in talks with the organizers, the 23 year old would see this as a brilliant way to cap off a year that has seen both her track ‘Bleeding Love’ and album ‘Spirit’ reach the top spot on both sides of the Atlantic.

Closer to home, our own amazingtunes chart-topping singer Laura White still has her two songs available to buy on amazingtunes here.

Pope-ular decision to forgive Lennon comments

November 24th, 2008

Forty-two years on and Vatican newspaper, L’Osservatore Romano, has ran an article suggesting the church is ready to forgive John Lennon for his claims that the Beatles were more popular than Jesus.

The paper puts Lennon’s comments, made in 1966, down to “showing off” from a “young English working class musician” who had experienced unexpected success. Given the meteoric rise of rock and roll and the global success of artists like Elvis Presley the Catholic Church has deemed his comments forgivable given the context of his situation.

“Christianity will go,” he said. “It will vanish and shrink. I needn’t argue with that; I’m right and I will be proved right.

“We’re more popular than Jesus now. I don’t know which will go first – rock ‘n’ roll or Christianity. Jesus was all right but his disciples were thick and ordinary. It’s them twisting it that ruins it for me.”

Chinese Democracy 15 years too late?

November 21st, 2008

Board up your windows, lock down your aerials, cover your children’s ears… Guns N’ Roses are just two days away from the release of their long awaited, hugely anticipated and massively expensive sixth studio album, Chinese Democracy.

15 years in the making and rumored at one point to have reached the staggering cost of $13 million it is potentially one of the most expensive recordings ever made, not to mention one of the longest production times. And the price alone is enough to make us at amazingtunes want to give it a go, hearing what $13m sounds squashed into one album. We may struggle to listen to this one unbiasedly… Axl Rose and friends have made some of the tracks available for your listening pleasure today though through their MySpace page and while the tracks are not purchasable just yet they are streamable with lasers “set to stun”.

Radiohead announce Latin American tour

November 21st, 2008

Radiohead have announced a handful of tour dates in March, with their schedule taking them over the Atlantic and into Latin America.

While this is sure to be a wonderful opportunity for those outside of Europe to experience Radioheads huge back-catalogue of great tracks, we were left wondering just how Thom and the boys’ were going to offset that undoubtedly huge carbon footprint.

While we’re on the topic of gigs it’s worth mentioning that amazingtunes’ great new gig feature is up and running and ready for you to find shows in your area or for you to announce your own live shows that are coming up. It’s pre-populated with venues and is wonderfully simple, which makes me think someone should have told Thom… That said however, I don’t think our gigs section has, as yet, any listings for venues in Santiago or Mexico City.
