amazing - you heard it here first

Let’s be honest, when we say Blackpool – music isn’t the first thing which springs to mind, is it? In fact it probably isn’t even on the shortlist of things that you first think of when I mention the seaside town.  However, this 19 year old looks set to rattle the not–so official line up of what may well be 1. The Pleasure Beach 2.The Tower and 3.The rock!

However don’t be fooled, Rae Morris may only be 19 but this lady has the voice (and hair) of a professional, mature and knowing yet honest and real. With her effortlessly beautiful songs and stunning voice, we are more than excited to have her play on the amazing stage at The Great Escape. Check out her Amazing Session below:

Rae Morris plays the Amazing Radio showcase at The Queens Hotel on Friday 11th May. Catch her at 4.30.

Clocking In

April 23rd, 2012

To celebrate the album release of one of Team Amazing Breakfast‘s favourite musical discoveries of the last year or so, this week it’s finally the turn of Clock Opera as Artist of the Week!

You remember Belongings, you remember Lesson No. 7 and Once and For All, you remember their incredible Amazing Session, and with the release of Ways to Forget this week, it seemed only fitting that we feature their talents across the week as Artist of the Week. Georgie will be speaking to Guy on Wednesday’s show, in the meantime, have a gander at them doing their thing for us in session!

From one talented bunch to a very talented individual, the latest sounds from Jessie Ware will hopefully bring a bit of sunshine to your day, as 110% is our brand new Track of the Week and very lovely it is too.

Presented by Ruth Barnes, The Other Woman is the only radio show in the UK with an all-female playlist.

This week TOW speaks to Saint Saviour, the angel-voiced singer who made her name writing and fronting Groove Armada’s latest album Black Light. Now she’s about to unleash her debut solo album on the world, Union. Becky Jones has a voice in a million and is a fantastic song-writer. She reckons she’s managed to please all her fans on this record, those who like her in die-hard electroclash mode and those who prefer her voice soaring over a piano ballad. It’s been a long road and now with a fresh signing to AEG Live, Saint Saviour cannot wait to get her music into the public domain.

On Tuesday Ruth went along to the Houses of Parliament to quaff House of Commons Sauvignon Blanc (seriously) alongside Bernard Butler, Martina Topley-Bird and Robert Wyatt as part of the Live Music Act celebrations. Here’s the official blurb: ‘Performances of live amplified music to audiences of less than 200 people between the hours of 8am-11pm will no longer require local authority permission.’ Big news! We’ll be hearing from UK Music CEO Jo Dipple who’s pleased as punch.

There’s a brand new single from Southampton/ Brighton uber folk quintet Moulettes, plus a radio play first for singer songwriter Sophie Jamieson whose song Harbour Wall we can’t get out of our heads. Plus we’re a little in love with Charlotte Hatherley’s new project Sylver Tongue, and whilst on the subject of tongues, we hear from The Sharp Tongues too – London via Ontario threesome who make kick ass rock ‘n roll.

There’s also new music from Visions of Trees, The Cornshed Sisters, Jenn Rawling & Barsho Parks, Zara McFarlane and more.

So it’s almost that time again – the third Saturday in April is nigh! This can mean only one thing for the physical format enthusiasts amongst us (read as vinyl geeks) – there’ll soon be a boatload of extra special exclusives via RECORD STORE DAY.

Now, much has been made over the past few years about the relevance of RSD, or the perceived lack of it, by various corners of the music loving world. Mostly along the lines of “Waah waah waah Record Store Day is rubbish! Physical is DEAD, what’s the point?!” Or: “BOOOOOO! How dare you?! You mp3 loving HEATHEN, it’s your fault, you’re ruining EVERYTHING!

(Granted, that’s a rather concise summation – you can find far more detail on last years internet based noisemaking and it’s plethora of angry responses here)

For all of the impassioned pleas, and despite the more negatively minded naysayers of years gone by – 2012 marks the 5th year of International RSD and it’s a huge comfort to watch it become even bigger and better than before. With an increased number of participating stores, an ever growing commitment from artists and labels alike, and more over, a palpable excitement from those of us who do celebrate the day – I can’t help but sit back and gleefully plan my shopping list. What’s more is that today, Friday 20th April, marks the launch of the New Official Record Store Chart – in association with the Official Charts Company – aiming to reflect the resurgence in physical sales that independent retailers have contributed to over the past couple of years.

I’ll not go into too much detail as to why I love hearing, and seeing, my favourite artists on record – as it would stretch far beyond the characters I’m confined to. I will say one thing though; you don’t only love your Mother on Mothering Sunday, or your Dad on Father’s Day. You wouldn’t only be nice to your loved ones on St Valentines either… Yes, Record Store Day does have some novelty value, and yes, big labels can be seen to ‘cash-in’ via back catalogues – but anything that focuses on the importance of supporting your independent retailers, and the artists within, has to be a good thing – whichever way you look at the event itself.

It’s an ethos that we here at amazing are extremely proud to support, and one that many of the artists on amazingtunes.com, and of course those amongst our playlists on Amazing Radio, are heavily involved with. Below are just some of the highlights from those that are new and emerging in this year’s exclusive product list. Happy hunting!

News: Daughter Signs to 4AD

April 19th, 2012

We tip our proverbial hat to the A&R department at 4AD, they are just knocking it out of the park in 2012. Having already snapped up Grimes and Purity Ring this year, they have today announced that Daughter will join the prestigious family. And she finds herself in good company alongside Bon Iver, tUnE-yArDs and St. Vincent.

We’ve been completely head-over-heels in love with Elena Tonra, aka Daughter, since we first played Run on Amazing Radio a year back. This January we included her in our 12×12 list; a list of the artists we thought would go onto huge things this year and we couldn’t be happier to see her much deserved signing to 4AD.

May her debut album blow you all away when it arrives. Catch her live at the following dates:

02 June – Bushstock Festival, London
14 July – Latitude Festival, Southwold
10 August – Dockville Festival, Hamburg
16 August – Frequency Festival, St. Pölten
19 August – Green Man Festival, Brecon Beacons
07 September – Berlin Festival, Berlin
09 September – Bestival, Isle Of Wight
02 November – Iceland Airwaves, Reykjavik

This is a simply beautiful piece of music. The alias of Ned Younger, Monument Valley create a rich patchwork of sound textures and storyteller vocals in the newest release, Your Cover Blown.

Ned Younger almost narrates his sorrowful lyrics across a soundscape of reverb laden guitars and piano arrangements. The morose raconteur’s lyrics are deft and powerful; Your Cover Blow apparently inspired by the death of a close friend. The track is the product of two years’ tinkering and is accompanied by a video shot and produced by the excellent Mahogany Blog, masterminds of the Mahogany Sessions. Check it out below.

The single is released on May 7th via Everybody’s Stalking which you can pre-order here.
