Every Sunday evening, Charlie Ashcroft counts down the Amazing Chart across the UK’s national DAB network on Amazing Radio. Here he is to reflect on our Christmas Number 1 and give us the very latest lowdown on the last week’s movers and shakers from amazingtunes.com

Happy Christmas! Hope you’ve been enjoying the festive period alongside all our seasonal shows on the station. In the midst of all the festivities, we’ve revealed our brand new Christmas Number 1. What a day!

Harlem globetrotter Azealia Banks is our queen of the chart this Christmas, with her dancefloor smash 212 having risen to the top of the pile to replace Laura Palmer by Bastille.

It’s the culmination of a mad few weeks for Ms Banks, with 212 and tons of her other ‘demos’ being continuously flung around like Quality Street at Christmas. As well as being one of our 12×12 picks and being selected in the BBC Sound poll, Banks has been picked to play the opening slot on the NME Awards Tour, on the same bill as Two Door Cinema Club, Tribes and Metronomy across the UK next year.

212’s rise to the top of the Amazing Chart has coincided with a heck of a lot of online hype and praise for Banks, but given the underground ethos and general outlook of the site you’re reading right now, it still seems somewhat apt that Amazing Radio and amazingtunes.com have such a leftfield, in-yer-face Number 1 for Christmas this year.

WooWoos and Cloud Control remain in the Top 5 this week, joined in those very echelons by London band Fractures, who are the worthy recipients of the ‘highest climber’ accolade after leaping 10 places from last week’s Number 14.

Slightly further behind, Hyde & BeastSpector, Male Bonding and Breton have all climbed into the Top 10, ahead of this week’s Highest New Entry from Melbourne sextet Alpine at Number 12.

Hello! Laura Palmer by Bastille gets another week on top of our rundown this week, marking three great weeks at the summit in the face of yet more tight competition.

In a week where Azealia Banks, WooWoos, Family Of The Year and Cloud Control have all entered the Top 5 for the first time, it’s a remarkable achievement by Dan Smith and the gang to have stayed glued to the top spot for another seven days, while also setting things up nicely for the race to the Amazing Chart Christmas Number 1 this Sunday.

Slightly further behind, Hyde & Beast and Fractures both continue to edge their way up the rankings with a view to entering the Top 10 before long, while Spector, Male Bonding and Breton are responsible for the Top 20’s trio of new arrivals.

Hallelujah, It's Christmas!

December 22nd, 2008

It may not have been the biggest shock in Chart history today when it was revealed that Alexandra ‘X-Factor’ Burke has scored a Number One for Christmas, with more than half a million sales of ‘Hallelujah, but the continuing love affair between the Christmas music buying public and the programme has moved to another level with the additional news that, the late and much lamented, Jeff Buckley’s definitive cover of the song has reached number two due to the irresistible pull of X-Factor. Even the original Leonard Cohen version has been invited to the party, reaching number 36 in the chart.
