TUNE Ezra Collective - Reason In Disguise ft. Jorja Smith
This is Ezra Collective’s time. The London jazz group are going global, storming every show they play and consuming every new element they come across in a pan-border, trans-continental display of creativity.
New single ‘ Reason In Disguise’ is a case in point. Channelling their energy in a more incisive manner, it’s a jazz-fuelled neo-soul burner, the assured, steady rhythms of Femi Koleoso at once recalling both Blue Note and Erykah Badu, an irresistible push-and-pull that feels innately natural.
TJ Koleoso holds down that rock-hard bassline, while Joe Armon-Jones daubs the canvas with splashes of colour from his keys. Horn section Dylan Jones a nd James Mollison provide the final outline, the final definition of ‘Reason In Disguise’, moving from snatched notes to billowing, breathy solos in just a flash of the keys.
And then there’s that vocal. BRIT Award winning, Mercury nominee Jorja Smith has enjoyed an astonishing 12 months, with debut album ‘Lost & Found’ crashing into the charts and bowling over fans with its deft, velvet-hewn modern soul.
Here, though, she supplies something incredibly personal, possibly even a little more raw than her solo work. ‘Reason In Disguise’ matches those neo-soul influences to UK grit, a kind of jewelled Lauryn Hill, or maybe even a more militant Sade.
It’s the perfect balance of ease and restraint, improvisation to immaculate control. ‘Reason In Disguise’ seems to represent everything inspiration about UK music right now – it’s ability to break rules, to shake up the dance, all while representing the enormous swirling blend of language and culture that makes up the country itself. This single drops just in time for their headline European tour starting 11th September and also a UK headline tour for November 2018 culminating with a London date at KOKO on Sunday 18th November
