'Battlecat' is the new EP by British electronic music experimentalist, James Alexander Bright aka Hairy Hands, set for release by Tape Club Records on 23rd February.
A charming, unique and creatively ravenous character, James has worked independently of the mainstream to develop a catalogue of work that weaves excitingly between the most ambitious genres.
Bored of clichéd love songs, Bright based the EP on an imaginary cat. From space. Bright even created a short comic book detailing Battlecat's adventures, in part inspired by the sci-fi drawings of EP sleeve artist Essy May.
"I developed the idea of taking on a character/theme/concept after listening to a lot of my girlfriend’s parents’ vinyl collection. I got massively into the original War of the Worlds record and around the same time I watched The RZA movie The Man with the Iron Fists which had some great martial arts cat-like men. I was inspired."
After periods in Devon and London, Bright now resides in the Hampshire countryside, which helps provide the impetus for his creativity.
"I love the wide open spaces you get in the country. There's nothing like walking out into the middle of a dark field at night and taking in all the sounds and stars! I think this is why I have a fascination with space travel/sci -fi and otherworldly electronic/analogue sounds. It's all wrapped up in imagination. I like to get into another headspace. Almost like playing a character in a B-movie. I like to let my mind travel and explore. Visually and audibly."
'Battlecat' EP features a line up of musicians that includes Kwake Bass (DOOM, Kate Tempest) and Andy Ramsay (Stereolab) on drums, saxophone by Jack Wylie of Portico, and Laurel Collective's Mark Rainbow on keys/synthesizers. It was mastered by Brainfeeder beatmaker and Leaving Records boss Matthewdavid. Hairy Hands featured on Morgan Hislop’s recent single 'Bright As The Moon, But Darkened By The Drama' for Slugabed's Activia Benz label.
