TUNE Tree Trunks - Girl
‘Girl’ is the new single by London three-piece Tree Trunks, released on November. Recorded in home studios across South London, the track is a slow-burn hymn for lost lovers.
Robert Hunter met Sam Lewis while playing shows with Rozi Plain and Francois and the Atlas Mountains, and they went on to release two EPs in two years as Tree Trunks, the first on Nightwave’s Heka Trax label, and the second on James Alexander Bright’s Phone Home imprint. Each EP’s lead single was played on BBC Radio 1 and 6music, as well as on Amazing Radio and Sydney’s Triple J.
Now they return - aided on vocals by Akiine - incorporating more of an analog sound into music influenced as much by modern pop like Frank Ocean as by 80s pioneers Yellow Magic Orchestra and Prince. With Spanish lyrics inspired by singer Sam Lewis’s Latino heritage, ‘Girl’ explores broken modern romance; what it means to fall for someone at the turn of the 21st century.
Tree Trunks are proud of their DIY spirit, doing the recording, mixing, artwork and release of the single themselves (mastering came courtesy of Olly Betts of The Duke Spirit). It’s a dedication to collaboration and community that has also seen them co-found their own acclaimed LGTB+ dance party - Pumping Velvet - and collaborate with Rozi Plain on the single’s remix. For Tree Trunks, making music in 2019 is all about blending boundaries - using technology to connect and explore new horizons, both musical and personal.
