“(SubSuburbia) is a treasure trove of clever lyrics and immersive imagery” - CLASH “(SubSuburbia) is an enduring record, full of wonderful detail and intriguing lyrical hooks” - Charlie Ashcroft “(Mr. Meaner) is a stomping pop-tinged album opener” - RnR Mag “Sounding excellent” - John Kennedy / Radio X Swift on the heels of his debut album release, SubSuburbia, available in Limited Edition green vinyl, plus a 10 date tour that finished just as the UK lockdown kicked in, Dan Lyons releases his latest single Mr. Meaner – produced by Florence & the Machine drummer and WhenYoung producer Chris Hayden with King Krule & WhenYoung engineer Yigit Bülbül on faders duty. With its strident drumbeat, underpinned with a rock-solid bass line and atmospheric guitars, the track sees Dan line up melodic hook after hook, in a clever vocal arrangement that never quite settles and continuously leads the listener onto pastures new. On a lyrical tip, Dan says of the release “Mr. Meaner lives in SubSuburbia, he has a drinking problem and anger issues. He takes his repressed emotions, turns them into violence and hurts the ones he loves. The song switches perspective all the time, from the abuser to the abused and then to the hapless voyeur, trying to offer some kind of support, but failing. On the surface the song is about an abusive, fictional marriage but I think everybody has had an experience with this kind of relationship”.
