TUNE Sadie Jemmett - Leonard's Waltz
The build up to recording Phoenix was intense. In the months leading up to it I lost my mother and also two close friends. This song is about loss, and our helplessness in the face of death. I had gone to visit one of my friends who was dying of cancer, we spent a beautiful afternoon together and I knew it would be the last time that I saw him. The song is written from observation about that afternoon. It is also a goodbye song for Leonard Cohen, who has been one of my greatest teachers in songwriting.
