TUNE South Of Summer - Cascade
To sum up the song itself, it is probably easier to tell the story.
The song is written about a guy who was disowned by his family, left to battle with his demons on his own, and let down by the system regarding his declining mental health, but these situations are never as black and white as they appear initially.
His mother took him as a child out of an abusive situation, in doing so she lost the family home, her car, her job and her security as she had to move across country to start their lives over.
She eventually met another man, they married and on the outside (this being some time after the move) everything appeared perfect, she had gotten her life on track and she did it for her son.
However the man she married turned out to be just as abusive to her and to her son as the previous partner, only this time the mother had no energy to save herself and to save her son.
As time progressed, so too did the abuse and eventually as a teenager the son ran away to escape the abuse and dysfunction. He struggled as a runaway with Drug abuse, violent crime, and as his mental health declined rapidly, he found himself caught up in a downward spiral.
He spent the remainder of his life living on the streets, spending time in prison, and developing many more destructive coping strategies that would eventually lead to his death.
His mother had never tried to find him as she was herself caught up in a dark, negative spiral of her own.
On hearing of her sons suicide at the the age of 23, (although it was 3 years after his suicide that she found out) the mother then took her own life.
The story I feel is important as it shows that we all try our very best to get by with the tools at our disposal.
