TUNE The Family Chain - Catholic
This is one of the oldest songs we play and was written on a sofa at 7AM some time in early 2014. When walking by The Level park in Brighton, I over heard a girl say to her friend '...I don't want to be a catholic anymore...' the next day, the song was born.
It's taken three attempts to record this song. The first in 2014 with Gus Taylor of The Magic Gang. The second in 2017 with Andrew Farmer from Sulky Boy who was in the band at the time. The third time lucky we recorded with Theo Verney in his live room in Church Road Studios Brighton. We recorded the song live to finally capture that energy that makes the song sound so alive.
The song is written from the imagined perspective of that girl walking by on The Level. What it might be like to be wanting to escape a faith she has grown up with
