TUNE James Marples - Go Quietly
RELEASES NEW SINGLE ‘GO QUIETLY’
FROM ‘GO QUIETLY’ EP DUE FOR RELEASE 1ST MAY
‘Go Quietly’ is the first single from the new EP of the same name by Australian singer songwriter, James Marples. The track was one of a suite of songs written as part of Marples’ residency at the Menzies Centre for Australian Studies at Kings College London in 2018. The lyrics of the song tell the story of the breakdown of Marples’ marriage and draws parallels between this relationship and that of Britain and Australia, its former colony. Alongside Marples' baritone voice, it features a pared-back Americana sound , and uses percussion, organ, pedal steel guitar, and female backing vocals to evoke the starkness of the Australian landscape.
The record was created with an ensemble of four musicians, Henry Senior (pedal steel), Rose Asprey (organ, backing vocals), and longtime Anna Calvi collaborator Mally Harpaz (percussion). The dark, subtle percussion textures Harpaz used so effectively on Calvi’s three Mercury-nominated albums can be heard clearly on this melancholic ballad too.
The full 'Go Quietly' EP will be launched at the iconic 1930s cinema Mirth, Marvel and Maud in Walthamstow on the 5th April at 7.30pm and the single is available to purchase on iTunes, Spotify and all digital platforms from the 1st May.
